Robot Proclaims Humans Have No Free Will; Can Be Controled

The Telegraph has an excellent article by a self proclaimed robot who says we have no free will. He It is willing to demonstrate by controlling humans via transcranial magnetic stimulation. The picture caption says it all.

The article goes on to debate the concept of free will and the societal implications of having none. I propose that this robot ploy is really intended to convince humans that we are not responsible for our actions, that we can run amok amongst ourselves, thinning the herd, and those willing to be "corrected" will be taught to behave through TMS or other such treatments.

"Oh, and while you're behaving yourself, human, be a dear and go work the mines."

Japan Takes a Crack at Robo-Ethics; Japanese Translator Needed

While the Times' take on this proposal by Japan's Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry is quite hilarious and telling, we here at Sans Sapiens need a certain brand of humor mixed with dire warning in our reporting. So far we've been relying on basic translation services such as Google's language tools (Example). While these tools are getting better every day we would be going against our principles to not see the inherent value of a good old fashioned human for pattern recognition services. If anyone out there shares our viewpoint and sense of humor and reads Japanese fluently, please drop us a comment.

To that end as well, if anyone sees anything hilariously absurd in this proposal that will inevitably lead to our bitter end at the shiny metallic hand of a robot overlord (even if you don't read Japanese). Feel free to shout out the warning to the world here.

From the Times Article:

  • Via a structure of general regulation and the adoption of that
    regulation, the planning, manufacturing, administration, repair, sales and use of robots shall observe the need for safety at every stage
  • The reasonably predictable misuse of robots shall be defined as the management, sale and use of next-generation robots for purposes not intended by manufacturers
  • There should, in principle, be no serious accidents such as fatal accidents involving robots, and the frequency of such accidents should be lowered as far as possible. Affordable multiple security measures should be taken in case one protection method alone is insufficient

Come on people. When you're building a superior robotic intellect with skull crushing appendages, you're not thinking about "predictable misuse" and "lowering accidents". Believe me I'd know... The danger is coming from robots designed from the start with the Intent to kill, and bogging down the friendly robots with red tape while inevitably leaving exceptions for military deathbots is doing nothing to save mankind.

Robo Ethicists vs. Hunter-Killer Sentries

Reuters and many others are reporting on an Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems Ltd.'s unveiling of its VIPeR (Versatile, Intelligent, Portable Robot) unmanned combat robot. While this isn't the first of its kind, it may be the first to actually see combat given Israel's statements that it plans to deploy the VIPeR among its infantry units after field tests.

Like other remote operated bots developed for military use it's designed to navigate rough environments, and it's modular enough to carry out many tasks such as surveillance, IED detection (as pictured), and combat using an Uzi automatic pistol or grenade launcher. A feature that sets the VIPeR apart though is its size. Some of the other backpack bots practically require a team member dedicated to carrying it around. The VIPeR on the other hand is the size of a small TV (18" x 18" x 9"H) and weighs in at only 25lbs.

At the same time, a continent or two away, South Korea, known for it's own killer robot sentries is drafting a "Robot Ethics Charter". According to the BBC the charter, to be drafted by "a five member team of experts that includes futurists and a science fiction writer", will lay some ground rules for human-robot interaction. Many assume this will in some way incorporate Asimov's three laws, but in addition to that the Korean's seem just as interested in governing how the humans treat their robots.
"Imagine if some people treat androids as if the machines were their wives," Park Hye-Young of the ministry's robot team told the AFP news agency.
If this were Japan I'd assume the "team of experts" had been infiltrated by androids. That doesn't seem to be the case, however. Their proposals are expected to be issued in Rome in April.

March on Daddy WarBot ... Warbot Daddy on March

On March 2, 2007 a group of antiwar protesters in Pittsburg are planning a blockade of CMU's National Robotics Engineering Center. The reason for this is of course CMU's continued and prolific war robotics programs and the enormous amount of funding CMU gets from DARPA, ONR, and other DoD and defense contractor sources. The device most highlighted by the group is the Gladiator remote controlled tank developed for the Marine Corps Systems Command in colaboration with BAE Systems.

Many robotics enthusiasts, I among them, have turned a mostly blind eye to the non-autonomous remote controlled robotic war machines and the research into them. Their goal has after all been not to create smart killing machines, but to separate our soldiers from the fight and out of harm's way. The point however brought up here and in this recent article is not about the intentions of the robots but instead what will the intentions be of the humans when going to war doesn't put any of your people in harm's way. If all we have to loose is some money and a few spare microcontrolers, then why not invade? Will remote control robot armies represent the new atomic arms race? After all, the only things that could stop nations from launching a robot army are Ethics, Economics, and an Even Bigger Robot Army.

As we raise generations of kids who think nothing of clicking their opponents into oblivion separating people from the reality of the death and destruction they can cause is the last thing we should do. That's why I promote the use of superhuman exoskeletons. Let's get an army of these puppies to march on CMU and see if we get a response. Additionally more researchers should be taking the stance of Prof. Sankai at the University of Tsukuba. Despite naming his company after the creators of SkyNet in the Terminator movies his HAL exoskeleton was built only after he refused DARPA funding. Note the distinct lack of weapons on this one. What on earth could it be used for then? Why, as a walking wheelchair and heavy lifting device of course!

In Unrelated news the city of Kobe, Japan is commisioning a 60 foot tall replica of Gigantor, the giant remote controled war machine of manga fame. In that fictional case the bot was created to defend Japan's WWII empire from the invading Americans, only for it to fall into the hands of a young boy who used it for good. Unfortunately in reality it appears we are heading in the opposite direction.
